Editing Tutorials 1

I watched this tutorial about how to edit my music video and I foud it quite helpful because it was quick and to the point.  He showed you how to sync the song with the video easily and explained that it is helpful to order and organise your shots before hand. However I found that is wasnt detailed enough and I got confused by some of the terminology.

Editing music videos 2

I really liked this editing tutorial because he explained how to use editing tools and how he chooses the best shots to use in the video. He also teaches how to get the timing so that the cut happens on the beat especially in fast editing.

Filmmaking Tips: Shooting Music Videos

I found this video extremely useful since he went through the preperation process of filming down to making sure we have enough equiptment, batteries and storage etc. He also said to get as much footage and shots as we can because it can always be edited down but at least you have enough to pull out shots that you like.

Applying narrative

http://youtu.be/zRCsZ5a3aCM

I looked at the video 'Marry me' by Jason Derulo. This song is about Jason telling his girlfiend that he is planning to marry her and how perfect she is to him. Kate Domaille's theory that every story can be fitted into one of eight catergories. I think this particular video would fit into the Romeo and Juliet catergory because they are completely in love and want to be together forever. We know this because in the lyrics he says "105 is the number that comes to my head, when I think of all the years I wanna be with you" which implies that they are completely in love just as Romeo and Juliet are. Domaille says that the Romeo and Juliet catergory is 'The love story' which is what this song is about.
Throughout this video Jason and his girlfriend are showing how much they love each other by doing 'couple' things together such as baking together, playing the piano together and watching films together, showing that they want to spend all of thier time together. This links to Romeo and Juliet because Romeo always sneaks into her house to be with her which is the 'pefect' love story.
Tim O'Sullivans theory that all media texts tell us some kind of story can be applied to this music video. This is because he says that for a story to be interesting it must be real to us as we watch it using verisimilitude. During this video we see a typical fairytale relationship of the couple cuddling and spending all of thier time together which is what happens in real life when you love someone so people can relate to it.
Steve Archre said that often music videos will cut between a narrative and a performance in the song sometimes having choreographed dance. The first picture shows Jason Derulo singing to the camera therefore it is performance then it cuts to him being affectionate with his girlfriend as you can see in the second video.  This makes it feel like the singer is directing the video to you aswel as the other actress.

Andrew Goodwin explores the relationships between the video and the lyrics. There are 4 types of narrative including:

  • Illustrative(Images provide a literal representation)
  • Amplifyingrepetition of key meanings and effects to manipulate the audience)
  • Contradicting(Images contrast with music)
  • Disjuncture(When the meaning of the song is completely ignored)

I think this music video (Marry Me) is illustrative due to the fact that the song is about him wanting ot marry her and her being the perfect girl and the video shows them being in love and being affectionate therfore the lyrics match the video.
